The Meddling Fiend
“Dead matter still has a lot of agency, a lot of presence.”
Watch artist Nicola Turner talk about how she created her sculpture 'The Meddling Fiend' in the RA courtyard for the Summer Exhibition 2024.
Turner took the statue of Sir Joshua Reynolds as her starting point and turned to the artist’s works for source material. In her own practice, Turner explores the boundaries between life, death and the liminal spaces in between, and it is these themes that she identified in Reynolds’s later works.
Turner uses sheep fleeces, chair stuffing, old horsehair mattresses and found objects including grand piano legs in her work. These objects in themselves hold traces of different histories and give new life to what would otherwise be discarded.
The Summer Exhibition 20204 runs from 18 June - 18 August 2024.

Yes, in ancient art, renaissance art, barock art etc. there was a lot of nudity. But it was painted on canvas or carved in marble by masters, which took months to paint / craft and decades to master. It wasn't just some lazy shit like putting nude people in a hallway.

No matter how subjectively beautiful art is, you can never understand the creator's purpose or perspective, and that leaves us to imagine its value.

It's never about how good or how esthetic you paint that makes you one of the greatests. It's never been the case. The ability to imagine does. The ability to never let the ability of imagination to die. That's what it means to be an artist.

I wrote this because many people and audience in the comment section are making fun of his childlike drawings but it's funny that when most of us are presented with a piece of blank paper and pen , there's nothing that comes to the mind and people will be thinking hard and hard what to paint and sketch. It's always that the vision and confidence surpasses.

Yet if I painted something similar it would be thrown in the bin. Everything in a NAME. Banksy sold some of his works on a street corner (undercover)...most went unsold, some oy sold for a few quid. The irony is that some passers by insulted his work. Then days later he announced what he did. Now the owners of the pictures they purchased for next to nothing- have highly valuable peices of Banksy art. It's just like fashion brands...your buying into a name ONLY.
